Newsletter ~ Jan - April 2009
Merry Xmas & Happy 2009!

Well, here we are another year gone by; can't believe how fast they go past. Hope this new year will be a good one for all of us.

Thanks to all of you who attend our concerts at the Music Hall. We have had some wonderful shows with some very special guests, and we appreciate your enthusiasm and loyalty. The band 's new CD “My Oklahoma” has been getting very good reviews. If you don't have your copy yet, you can order one online through our website: doublestop.com , or just drop by the Fiddle Shop.

Speaking of shows, the annual Fiddlefest is scheduled for February 21, and we'll have some of your favorite fiddlers and a few new ones. Billy Joe Foster is planning on trying to get back up to Guthrie, the kids from Rockin' Acoustic Circus, the Hunt boys , the Pendleton sisters, and maybe a surprise or two. This is always a very popular show and tickets go fast. Make your reservations early!

I hope you all enjoyed the bluegrass festival in October. We are already gearing up for next year. I have some good artists lined up so mark your calendars for Oct. 1–3; it won’t fall on the OU-Texas weekend this time! Get your tickets early and save some money.

Always keep looking on our website for updates and new happenings. We don't want you to miss anything.

DISCOUNT TICKETS

We are continuing the offer for bargain tickets, 8 shows for $66.00 ($132 per couple). That’s $8.00 per show ($10 for the Fiddlefest) January through April and the privilege of selecting your reserved seat. The schedule on the reverse lists these shows with an asterix. The tickets will be ready to buy by the time you read this. Remember it is first-come first-served for the seat selection, and we hold your seat for you only until show time.

WESTERN SWING

These annual shows have become so popular with us and with you that we decided to repeat the event again. Put May 16th on your calendar now to join Leon Rausch, some of the Texas Playboys, and our triple fiddles in some of your favorite tunes from the Bob Wills era. There is plenty of room for listening and dancing at Logan Co. Fairgrounds, so round up your friends and
neighbors for a really fun evening.

LESSONS

Jim Garling continues to teach beginning and intermediate fiddle and guitar students. He is also planning a guitar or theory workshop on Saturday mornings, beginning in February but depending upon the interest. He can be reached at 405-306-4182. John Hickman works with banjo students and Greg Burgess teaches advanced fiddle students. Call for information: 405-282-6646

I encourage each of you to come by the shop whenever you get a chance just to say hello, see our inventory of instruments, or join the jam. Andrew and Jonathon Hunt come in often and we can't resist a couple hours worth of good pickin'. In addition we have a wonderful variety of instruments and music accessories, and don't forget I like to buy and trade instruments. If you have some old relic lying around, bring it in and I will evaluate it for you.

INSTRUMENTS AT THE SHOP

We have lots of new and vintage instruments at the Fiddle Shop; new guitars, fiddles, mandolins and banjos. Now that school is beginning again, get your string instrument here --- we will make sure it is set up and ready to go.

GUITARS :
I’ve added some nice older guitars: a 1965 Epiphone Texan, a new Fender Telecaster, an Artist Les Paul Gibson, and several really good sounding flat-tops from Blueridge, Johnson, Revival and Alvarez. I also have a cool looking resophonic round neck with electric pick-up. I just got in some new guitars '62 Gibson J-50-ADJ, '79 J-50 & a Songwriter Gibson w/ a nice pick-up built in. Martin HD-28 almost new - some nice arch tops - Gibson Talfarlow, ES-5 Switchmaster, all great prices. Original 1980's Dobro.

VIOLINS, VIOLAS, BOWS :

We have Oklahoma’s best selection of these instruments, and now we are happy to show and sell the violins of Lucas Wronski. You must see and play his violins and meet the man himself. Check the website to see and hear them. I have some wonderful 18th and 19th century violins from all over the world, and several entry-level violins starting at $150. If you are looking for a good deal in a fiddle or bow, cases and all violin accessories, come in and we’ll help you out with something.

MANDOLINS :

Weber is making a really great mandolin these days. I have a fantastic-sounding Yellowstone model honeycolor, radius fingerboard, cedar top, tortoise binding that is just beautiful! Eduard Kristufek makes an incredible mandolin; in stock I have a Fern varnish and a Fern lacquer with cedar top. They both sound great. Others available: an Eastman A Model - looks and sounds great, a Collings F model with satin finish and a big sound; an F-5G Gibson; and several affordable mandolins from Eastman, Kentucky, Johnson, Washburn, Rover and Bovier.

BANJOS :

We still have a good selection of new and used banjos. I just picked up another old Gibson, late ‘20s or early ‘30s, TB-1 with a 5 string neck, really nice. Also have 2 old tenor Gibsons from the ‘20s or ‘30s, plus Ridge, RB-3 Gibson and Kristufek banjos from the Czech Republic which are very, very nice. We can also get you started on some nice entry-level instruments.

MISC :

You can find all kinds of accessories at the shop: tuners, straps, picks, rosin, strings, capos, pick-ups, chin rests, shoulder rests, pitch pipes, books on how to play, DVDs and CDs of the band and solo CDs.
